Also, according to a Harvard University study involving 20 volunteers, working with shifting cycles affects the production of insulin and leptin, the satiety hormone. In the experiment, participants who worked at night and slept during the day showed a significant increase in appetite due to fluctuations in hormone levels. Thus, by maintaining such an inverted daytime routine, you may have an overweight problem. Also, nighttime activity increases levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Because of this, participants in the experiment had higher blood pressure and blood sugar levels, which often occurs in the initial stages of diabetes.

Another study on night work, conducted by scientists from Argentina, sheds light on another negative. According to their results, working at night significantly reduces a person’s levels of serotonin, the happiness hormone. This causes an increase in irritability, sleep disturbance and increases the tendency to depression.

It is more common for a person to sleep during the dark hours of the day, at which time the body’s concentration and attentiveness decreases. Increased distraction can lead to serious consequences, such as a medical error or a car accident. Recall that the infamous Chernobyl accident occurred precisely during the night shift.

Note that “sleeping off” during the day is less effective than sleeping a full night’s sleep. On this background, with regular work at night, a person can develop chronic lack of sleep.
